Bond’s skyfall at Edge Farm

An impeccable James Bond style country house, with its own skyfall private runway and helicopter access, set within 44 acres is on the market with Balfours.

Edge Farm is located 40 miles west of Birmingham, at East Wall, the stunning contemporary country house, is the dream build of Phil and Pauline Broome. The couple were attracted to South Shropshire’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which also combined Phil’s need to create a runway, enabling him to test aircraft brought over from the USA.

Growing from humble roots in Wellington, Phil’s intriguing mix of wheeling and dealing commenced at an early age; first in old coins and gradually to motor bikes and cars, by which time he had graduated in electronic engineering. His career and affinity to his home county is strong and led to him setting up a computer company in Telford in 1993, ultimately selling out to Xerox.

However the driver for Edge Farm was borne out of a visit to America when this entrepreneur recalls: “We were on holiday in the States and I ended up owning a couple of aircraft companies, as a result I needed 400 metres a place for testing aircraft, with some flat land.

One year later, in 2010 they acquired Edge Farm and the couple set about replacing the existing farmhouse with a twenty first century energy efficient property designed to their specification. Key to that was a cinema room and from Pauline’s wish list a very large kitchen. Both have been achieved with panache.

The project took three years and despite a lavish finish includes fastidious specifications to insulation, underfloor heating and thermal storage. Two 26KW wood-burners are backed by a sustainable source of woodland on the farm.

Agent, Duncan Scobie of Balfours, “Edge Farm wants for nothing, it is located in a fabulous private location between Church Stretton and Much Wenlock, yet only 40 miles from Birmingham. Residential accommodation extends to 9,000 square feet over four levels and fully embraces the very latest technology.”

Phil explains: “My wife always says the kitchen is the best she has ever had and it is our favourite part of the house.” With bi-fold walls of glass natural light plays on the sleek and easy clean polished stone floors and granite worktops. A true kitchen breakfast room there is an abundance of space to relax or entertain in too. The ground floor accommodates a further three reception rooms, plus a hugely generous reception hall. Each of the three bedrooms on the first floor is accessed off the gallery landing; all are en-suite with the master suite incorporating a dressing room.

There are a further four bedrooms and two bathrooms on the second floor. The jewel of the basement is of course the high spec cinema room; there is also a games rooms, large office, plus laundry, plant and store rooms.

For Phil and Pauline Edge Farm has been a magical experience: “The wildlife is quite priceless, from the balcony we can watch the swans and geese on the pond at the bottom of the garden. We have also enjoyed our own flock of pedigree Ryeland sheep, this year introducing Chocolate Ryelands which has been great fun. However now semi-retired, the couple are seeking a new adventure, as a result Edge Farm, East Wall, is marketed by Balfours with a guide price of £2m. For more information call Duncan Scobie on 01743 353511.
