Coracle World Championship – Full Race Card

The Coracle World Championship has a capacity race-card with 48 teams from across Shropshire entered and ready to make a splash in the River Severn, next Friday, September 14.

Launched from Pengwern Boat Club, preparations are well underway with each team raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support – in hope of beating last year’s mammoth achievement of £33,700.

With racing commencing at 2.30pm each team has four members, with each member having to paddle the coracle across the Severn, in relay. Macmillan support fund raiser, Kate Thomas explains: “We have six fabulous colourful coracles, so we will run the event in five heats, followed by the final. The coracle is a shallow roundish shaped one man boat designed centuries ago – they tend to be pretty precarious, particularly at speed, so provide fantastic spectator sport.”

There are a number of facets to the competition, not only the relay race across the Severn, there is also a prize for fancy dress. The most coveted prize is the Richard Bayliss trophy for the team raising the greatest sponsorship, in honour of the late founder of the Coracle World Championship.

Richard’s colleague, Balfours partner, Tim Perkins says: “It was typical of Richard, with his sense of fun closely coupled to his generosity and determination to help others that he persuaded a collection of Shrewsbury companies to paddle back in 2008. The unique event, coupled with his drive quickly made it a feature in Shrewsbury’s business calendar – to-date raising more than £230,000.

“Sadly, Richard himself was cruelly diagnosed with cancer and lost his battle to the disease in 2015, so we are immensely proud that it has the tremendous support with teams representing business from throughout Shropshire, including this year’s main sponsors Galliers Homes.”

Donations can be made on the Balfours Just Giving Page, or come along on the day September 14 – and enjoy a fun afternoon on the banks of the Severn.
