Balfours Apprenticeship Success Story - Nathan Baker

Today leaving school at 16 is a brave and some might say short-sighted move. However Nathan Baker, now 20 years old, has proved a career path that not only offers great prospects, but also a positive bank balance, with no University debts.

Nathan was offered a job with land agents Balfours, in its accounts department linked to an apprenticeship with Herefordshire and Ludlow Colleges. Four years on the job studying came to fruition last autumn in a double graduation ceremony at Hereford Cathedral where he achieved an Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and Business Skills, level four.

Now taking a gap period from four years studying, Nathan continues to enjoy the challenges within Balfours accounts team. “It is really rewarding when we are working on big projects and year end is always full of interesting challenges,” he reflects.

While enjoying a period of consolidation, he is already researching the prospect of embarking on his ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accounts) which is practice audit/tax accounting. He says: “It has been a new challenge, moving from Balfours Craven Arms office, to the Shrewsbury office at Oxon Business Park. There are a number of us all undertaking part-time studies alongside our work, which is motivating and means there is always someone to help with accounting conundrums.”

Nathan modestly omits to mention that not only has he graduated, but he has received promotion within Balfours’ growing business.
