Septic Tank Registration

Guidance for registering a septic tank discharge on the Environmental Agency Website

The website address is: www.environment-agency.gov.uk

• From the home page under the first of three main headings entitled 'at home and leisure' click into 'more in at home and leisure'
• On the 'at home and leisure' page go to the green box on the left hand side of the page, click on the fifth arrow 'register Your Septic Tank'
• On the 'register your septic tank' page scroll down to step 3 you can now either start the online process (see directions below) or, go down to the application form 'application form to register a septic tank or small sewage treatment plant' and download to register online
• On the 'register your septic tank' page, press the "start the online registration process'
• Depending on your browser you may get a security warning - do you want to view webpage content securely .. we recommend you press 'no' to see the pages in full format. most older browsers will ask you this question after every page - keep saying no. or there is a box at the bottom of your screen saying 'only secure content is displayed - whats the risk - go to show all content.
• On the online applications page, you may be asked to enter a code given, enter this into the box and press the submit button.
• On the online applications page under 'Party Type' select individual and press next.
• On the 'about the applicant page' complete the name section where marked, press find address, enter your postcode and then search. select your address and click, make sure that 'england' is showing under country, press select and then enter all the further information required ie date of birth and contact details and then press next. If this page comes up again, please press the next button again.
• You are now on the 'locations with exemptions page'. please add your address again, as above, and then go to 'uk grid reference finder'. enter your postcode into the box and then press 'go' and a satellite picture of your house will appear. if this is correct hover over the pin and the 12 digit reference number will appear. if, it isn't in the correct place then you need to right click where your property is and a new pin will appear, again hover over it and the 12 digit reference number will appear, click back onto the online form.
• Enter the 12 digit reference onto the form, make sure 'no' to exemptions is showing. on the exemption category section, press sewage discharge into ground and then select the second option - 004 existing discharge to ground of 2 cubic metres or less, then click add. Then scroll down to the bottom and click on 'next'. at the bottom of that page respond 'no' to activity within 50m of ground water on 'proximity to drinking water' page and press next. finally, tick the declaration box agreeing to the terms and submit.
• A copy of the form will be sent to your home address in a few weeks
